Words I wish i hadn’t met

before the ache
you laugh/ed
the way my head worked
be/fore now: thick and heavy
syrup of delayed rejection
finally granted its long-delayed birth
before t/his and you

when you pursed your lips, i
said maybe we should find other things to talk about
but our thoughts were worlds in separate orbits
already looping away
and the words, endless and eager in my mind,
were dead in my mouth

in an abandoned window dropping down the list
where once i stared at the sepia screen under
tent-pitched blankets
i now wait for the settling of sleep
i’m alright i guess
but the valley of my depression was really a net
cast out on happier mornings
before this and you
