2014. What a year for movies! I’ll go as far as to say it’s the best one in recent memory. Also, it feels a bit silly doing this when there are so many films I’ve yet to watch (full list below), but then again, when’s that ever stopped me? So without further ado, these were my favourite movies of 2014:
Abrasive, chilling, insuperable masterpiece that transcends the medium.
Staggering in its scope and depth, with some breathtakingly gorgeous shots and sharp dialogue.
There’s no real way to adequately review (critique?) Birdman, so I’ll just say I really, really loved it.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
A fascinating watch. I’m seriously contemplating buying the soundtrack on iTunes.
A movie with heart, soul, and a model exterior to boot.
A great movie in a year of great movies.
Rich, assured, and deeply poignant with an incredibly understated turn from Oscar Isaac.
9. The Double
Mesmerizing, haunting, insane.
10. The Babadook
Honourable Mentions (in order):
Gone Girl, Nightcrawler, Interstellar, Tracks, Days of Future Past, Foxcatcher
And here are some of the movies I’ve yet to watch:
- The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
- Winter Sleep
- Force Majeure
- Two Days, One Night
- Life Itself
- The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
- Next Goal Wins
- Inherent Vice
- The Dark Horse
- Magical Girl
- Mr. Turner
- Stand clear of the closing doors
