Last year I compiled a huge list of the best albums of 2013. This time round, I went through all my favourite albums of the year and actually had a go at ranking them. Took an incredibly long time to complete this one. As a result, the essential albums list hasn’t been updated for a couple of weeks – will get back to that soon!

And with the housekeeping over, the countdown…begins!
