Variation on Ammons

Like
The chartreuse underlayer hidden from sight
Sipping the trickle-down
Drainwater, growing, aimlessly
So
You fell away from the light
of recent laughter, and returned,
reconstructed, features sharpened by longing
polite simpering replaced with knowing smiles
And
I went through all the motions: kept away,
changed subjects, averted eyes, and yet
You
Know I’m the result of
forces beyond my control
But it came out in a flustered garble,
no song from the snowsplattered branches,
no acknowledgement from the drainmoss
Only unwelcoming forms, but still
I wait
